How to light a small and large terrace?

In spring and summer, we naturally spend more time outdoors. If you have a terrace, this is definitely the last call to get it ready for the summer 2023 season. Lighting will be an essential point that not only adds atmosphere and character but also makes it possible to be outside after dark.

Effective terrace lighting

In order to make the terrace a place for rest and relaxation, proper lighting planning is key. Various types of accessories, interesting lamp shapes and the layout of lighting zones are the first thing you should do. In addition, when choosing lighting, consider not only the lighting needs of specific spaces but also pay attention to the parameters and, of course, the appearance of luminaires. Terrace lighting should be effective, yet also striking for our well-being.

Lighting a small terrace

Small space does not mean fewer opportunities. Mounting lamps and creating a cosy atmosphere in a small area can be simpler and cheaper than filling many square metres of area.
Think about the furnishings you want to place on the terrace. If you are interested in having a table and chairs for eating your meals, a main lamp will certainly come in handy. The Kanlux JURBA ceiling mounted lamp is characterised by its excellent workmanship and the possibility to be mounted outdoors. This is due to the increased IP44 rating, which protects the lamp from dust and moisture.

The terrace is also a place to calm down and spend time with evening tea. The most popular are lamps that provide additional lighting, such as wall-mounted luminaire. Kanlux PRESO mounted on walls is a recipe for diffused light that will accompany you without blinding you. Thanks to the universal E27 cap, they fit most light bulbs, regardless of light intensity and colour. Not too high wattages and a warm light colour will work best. Choose ones between 1800K and 3000K. You will find this labelling on the packaging.
Not convinced by the main and side lighting and dreaming of a space straight from Pinterest inspiration? Opt for Kanlux GRL STRING LIGHTS. With as many as three lengths – 6, 11 and 15 metres – that offer a wide range of arrangement possibilities. Do you think that's not enough? Don't worry, thanks to the pass-through power supply, you can connect several string lights together and create an installation of up to 150 metres! Ideally suited to the garden string lights are Kanlux ST45 bulbs.

Lighting a large terrace

A large terrace means more possibilities. Split it into zones – one for relaxing, the other for eating meals. Mount a main light too – ideal for larger parties held outside. Façade lights will be an effective solution. Kanlux LART is a raw yet classic line of luminaires. The casing is made of aluminium, which ensures high durability and resistance to damage. Install them on the terrace and façade of the house to create a coherent whole.

Do you want the terrace to be an extension of the garden? Opt for the universal Kanlux PRESO collection. There you will find four garden luminaires – three posts ranging in height from 30 to 80 cm and wall-mounted luminaires. The profiled design of the lampshade prevents water from staying on the surface of the lamp. This way, the entire lighting will come together and the terrace will become a natural part of the garden.

A lamp with an oval-shaped shade and a decorative bulb will look great above the main table. An example is Kanlux LIEGO – striking, simple, minimalist. If you like coherence, you can also match it with outdoor posts and wall-mounted luminaires so that the terrace looks harmonious.

Bear in mind that not every lamp will be suitable for mounting on a terrace. You need to consider not only its appearance, but also its specifications for water or dirt resistance. It should have an IP rating of at least 44 – this means an increased protection class. This parameter indicates the degree of protection against foreign particles with a diameter greater than 1 mm and against water falling on the lamp from any direction

Whether you have a small or large terrace, you will find striking and comfortable lighting for any size. If you consider durability, resistance and design, you get a coherent and cosy corner for spending summer evenings.
