Atmospheric home – everybody’s dream! We know how to do it with light...

We would all like our homes to be an atmospheric place where we go back with joy after a hard day of work or holiday leave. Of course, there is no doubt that the feeling of home is created by the people who live there. However, on the other hand, there are many elements we can take care of no matter the character of tenants (that’s the way architects work – when designing, among others, hotel interiors). One of such elements is interior lighting.

Atmospheric home – everybody’s dream! We know how to do it with light... - 1

When thinking about lighting which adds a character to our home, the preparation work should start as early as at the stage of design and construction of the interior. It’s good to focus on a few aspects.
Lighting cannot be too intensive. Remember to use the natural light streaming through windows as much as possible. Interiors designed in bright colours need less artificial light than the ones with accessories in dark colours.
Think about the initial arrangement of furniture and separation of functional zones. Thanks to this, you’ll see where lighting will be needed: on the ceiling, wall or on the floor. Provide cables in those places so that you can install the fitting later. At this stage, it is also good to consider the issue of turning the light on and off.

Apart from the location of the lamps, it is good to take into consideration lamps and lightbulbs with dimming options, so that the light was adjusted to a given activity and time of the day.  For example, Kanlux XLED STEP DIM is a lightbulb with a light intensity that can be gradually reduced without an additional “dimmer”. You only need to turn the light off and then on, and the lightbulb will emit 100, 50 or 7 per cent of the light. With the second variant, Kanlux XLED STEP CCT you can easily change the colour of the light and create a pleasant atmosphere, perfect when you want to focus or rest. With a few next clicks on the switch, you can change the colour of the light emitted by the lightbulb. From cool, through neutral, to warm light.
Not only the number of lamps, their location and the colour temperature of the light make up the atmosphere. The look, quality and the style of the interiors are also important. You can choose from a few types of ceiling lamps. We will try to classify the types of ceiling lamps in the easiest possible way.

Pendant lamps – they will work perfectly in a dining room over the table, in the seating area of a living room or by the bedside table.  You can use one, big lamp or 2–3 smaller ones. Pendant lamps are a strong accent of the furnishing so make sure they match the rest of the elements in the room. E27 or E14 lightbulbs are used in most of pendant lamps, the GU10 type is used less frequently. You can also use integrated lighting fittings such as e.g. Kanlux ALIN batten light fitting.

Surface-mounted lamps are mounted to the ceiling surface.  These include one-point (with one lightbulb installed) or multi-point lamps. For these lamps, GU10 lightbulbs are usually used. Their advantage is small size. They also often have a function of adjusting the light direction. They work well as a set in lighting the corridors or ceilings, e.g. over kitchen worktops.  They gained their popularity a few years ago thanks to Kanlux BORD and Kanlux GORD series. More and more often surface-mounted light fittings use ES-111 lightbulbs (Kanlux STOBI ES).

Light fittings for building in which are often called spotlight (those with replaceable lightbulbs) or downlights (integrated LED lamps). They are indispensable if we want to light a ceiling with a few small lighting accents. Similarly to surface-mounted lamps, they can enable light angle adjustment. A new trend are built-in light fittings which look like a surface-mounted lamp or a spotlight (Kanlux MINI BORD, Kanlux MINI GORD, Kanlux GOVIK, Kanlux CHIRO).

Spotlight fittings are still a fashionable and popular solution. They usually appear in series, including lamps with 1, 2 or 3, or even 4 lightbulbs. Such a combination enables maintaining consistency when mounting different variations of this type of lamps (on-point fittings on walls, multi-point ones on a ceiling). Spotlights may replace surface-mounted lamps, most of them is mounted in a very similar way. An unquestionable advantage of spotlights is their great capacity in terms of spotlight direction adjustment – thanks to this, even if the cable is provided in one place on a ceiling, we can effectively add more light to various parts of a room.
Also, they will work perfectly as:
– wall lamps illuminating images or a photo gallery
– lighting of critical surfaces with a large number of slopes (attic).

Ceiling light fittings are large light fittings mounted in one place. They are characterised by a low height which makes them perfect for places with low ceiling. They may be integrated or with replaceable lightbulbs. They fit perfectly in all corners of the house.

What other lamps can we use to light and decorate our house? Standing lamps for sure – there are also a few types available. Desk lamps are an indispensable lighting element in a workplace, especially in winter evenings. Table lamps are decorations for chests of drawers and bookcases, moreover, they add a subtle light in the rooms. A floor lamp will be the perfect companion of a bedside table, your favourite armchair or a couch. With an appropriately selected floor lamp, we gain a cozy atmosphere and we can give up using ceiling lamps which, as a rule, provide a strong light.

For houses or flats with stairs, stair lighting will prove helpful – read more about stair lighting HERE.
And what about LED strips? This lighting element will work everywhere. In suspended ceilings, in a wardrobe, as backlighting behind the TV or as a stair lighting. Here, you have an infinite number of options, everything depends on your preferences and what you can afford.
