How to plan lighting for your kitchen or kitchenette

The less sunshine and warmth there is outside, the more time we spend in our kitchen. Autumn and winter weather and gloom are easier to bear when cooking, eating together or, for example, playing board games. The special charm of this room can be perfectly brought out and emphasised with well-chosen lighting. See what you should pay attention to.

How to plan lighting for your kitchen or kitchenette - 1

Are you planning to install lighting in your kitchen? Make it easy for yourself by dividing them into three groups: central, task and decorative. The first one can take the form of a pendant lamp, a surface-mounted luminaire, a ceiling luminaire or fixed downlights.
Task lighting, also known as function lighting, are usually several different light sources that complement each other to illuminate work surfaces. It can combine almost all types of lighting, including table lamps, under-cabinet luminaires, and LED strips for self-assembly, which lately are the most popular solution.
Decorative lighting, on the other hand, is an accessory that ensures a nice and cosy atmosphere and gives character to the kitchen.

Central lighting

In the past, kitchen lighting was usually limited to a powerful, centrally positioned pendant lamp. Modern kitchens are usually illuminated by several adjustable spotlights. A good idea is to place some of them in the suspended ceiling. An example of such solution might be Kanlux SEIDY ceiling luminaire, available in several colours and in versions with one or two light sources. Its simple design allows it to be installed in any type of surface, and the materials used make it easy to clean, which is important in the kitchen.

Task lighting

Ceiling luminaires located one and a half metres above the table may not illuminate it effectively enough to allow you to efficiently prepare meals or do your homework. Kanlux DAIBO LED luminaire is a versatile solution that provides appropriate lighting for every activity. It is a universal table lamp with a very simple design and - which is very important in the kitchen - easy to clean. Thanks to its minimalist design, it can be matched to any interior, and the movable shade makes it possible to direct the light beam in any direction.

Under-cabinet luminaires

Lighting a kitchen table is important, but peeling and cutting food is usually done on worktops located under wall cabinets. This is where the most popular type of task lighting is usually installed, i.e. under-cabinet luminaires, e.g. Kanlux MERA LED with integrated LED light source. This highly efficient model, available in several sizes, can be individually combined in sets of up to 5 lamps, providing workspaces with perfect brightness.

Kanlux ZEPO series downlights are also designed as under-cabinet lighting, available in versions with and without switches. The elegant combination of steel luminaire and glass lampshade will ensure not only a source of light but will also serve as a decorative element.

Decorative lighting

Decorative kitchen lighting seems like a dispensable luxury, but it can also serve as a central or task light. How? Combine several pendant lamps of the same model at different heights. Such a set can be composed of e.g. Kanlux ALGO luminaires, available in cylinder or cube shapes. Thanks to their small size, they look impressive both in spacious kitchen interiors and in kitchenettes, and the adjustable cord, which is up to 65 cm long, allows you to change freely the height at which they hang. This is important, as the light must not glare the family.

Careful planned kitchen lighting will serve you well for years, so it's worth thinking it through and preferably consulting a professional. Such a plan must be tailored to the function and size of the room. The right planning of lighting will not only make cooking easier, but will also make staying in the kitchen a pleasure.
