Replaceable-or-non-replaceable-light source–which-fixture-to-choose?

LED lighting, which was initially treated with distrust, has won the market over thanks to its customizability as well as unprecedented cost savings and lifespan. In doubt about whether to choose a lamp with a replaceable light source or one with a non-replaceable light source? Each solution has its advantages and disadvantages. Learn about some of the most important ones!

Do you see "LED" in the name on the package?

Most users say "I have a LED lamp, because it has a LED bulb". It should be clarified, however, that it is not a "LED lamp", but a fixture which utilises a LED light source.  Most manufacturers use the term "LED lamp" only for products with a non-replaceable, factory-installed light source. If the product does not have "LED" in its name, it usually offers the option to replace the bulb. In this case, the choice between halogen, LED and fluorescent tubes is yours.

You select the colour, intensity and CRI

For replaceable light sources, you can choose the colour, intensity and colour rendering index (CRI or RA for short) yourself. This means that you can adapt the lighting in the room to the time of year, e.g. opting for a weaker and warmer light in the summer, since it will be usually lit during your time to relax. A stronger and cold light would make it more difficult to relax and fall asleep.

Non-replaceable with adjustment?

LED fixtures with a non-replaceable source are convenient and time-saving. They are often controlled via panels or remote controls, which make it possible to adjust some of the parameters, though not to a full extent. Kalnux LED AWAN is a good example of this; it is a desk lamp with a touch switch providing a 3-level brightness adjustment.

You select the decorative light bulbs

One advantage of replaceable light sources frequently lies in their attractive form. If you want a very warm light (2500 Kelvin) that is also decorative, you can choose a lamp with an open shade. This lets you expose the bulbs, which are an ornament in their own right.

Convenience and reliability

If you are looking for a ceiling light for your bathroom or for an outdoor light, choose the convenience and safety of a non-replaceable source in an airtight fixture, such as Kanlux ASTEN LED. This, of course, limits your choices, because you can only pick the light colour and wattage from those offered by the manufacturer, but it also ensures higher reliability of illumination.

Durability and tightness

Downlight type fixtures (i.e. mounted on the ceiling and projecting the light downwards) with an integrated light source – such as Kanlux AREL LED – are often more durable and tight than those with a replaceable light source, which is crucial for rooms characterised by increased humidity and significant temperature fluctuations.

Design

Home fixtures with replaceable light sources definitely win in terms of design. Their strengths include open, original shapes and decorative features. They provide a much wider selection of light source types. They also make it possible to choose bulbs with a colour change or a luminous flux function – such as Kanlux XLED STEP CCT.

Warranty and service

It is essential to check the length of the warranty period prior to making a choice and purchasing. The most common warranty period on offer is 2 years, as it is mandated by provisions of law. Both manufacturers and importers are obliged to provide it by regulations.

For a fixture with a non-replaceable light source, it is also important to learn about the conditions of post-warranty service. This is a crucial issue for all manufacturers, because more often than not lamps prove beyond repair. It is worth noting that this usually applies to imported lamps, while domestic manufacturers typically offer spare parts.

In summary, both solutions have their pros and cons. An integrated lighting fixture is usually more durable and tight. There are remote-controlled models, and even models with motion or dusk sensors. Fixtures with replaceable "bulbs" are more decorative and offer more possibilities for choosing the perfect light, as well as the option to replace it at any time. The decision is up to you.
