All you need to know about light pollution

Light pollution means a situation when outdoor lighting is not properly designed. Excessive clusters of lamps, illuminated advertisements or their too high power can have a significant impact on that. Currently, it is becoming a bigger problem every year - what does this entail and how can the issue be solved?

All you need to know about light pollution - 1

To better understand that phenomenon and its consequences, it is necessary to distinguish three types of light pollution.

The first one is glare - the direct effect of too much light. This happens, for example, when one looks directly at a lit light bulb and there is a temporary glare or impairment of vision. This affects not only humans, but also animals. It is particularly dangerous for drivers and wild animals that live near human concentrations.

The second one is clutter. It means situations when too much external light enters apartment blocks or houses at night. This can cause sleep problems and consequently increase the risk of certain diseases. Too many illuminated advertisements, incorrectly installed lanterns and even lamps or garden floodlights that shine all night can make it difficult for us to sleep.

The last type of light pollution is the blue glow, associated with the scattering of blue light in the atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why observing the sky in cities is more difficult and sometimes impossible. When we go to the countryside, where outdoor lighting is severely limited, we see far more stars. This is due to the fact that the sky there can be up to 80 times darker than in urban areas.

How to prevent light pollution?

The invention of the light bulb was a major technological leap. Today, we cannot imagine life without lighting. There is no doubt that it is very necessary, even indispensable. However, it should be used wisely so that it does not harm us and the whole planet.

One of the solutions is to change external light fittings to ones that direct the light to a specific point rather than scattering it. Kanlux VORA is a garden luminaire with a replaceable light source, which is fixed to the ground with a spike - this allows it to be easily moved when needed. The design of the head with a flange reduces light scattering and its 7W power provides illumination at the optimal level, so that it is not a nuisance for you and your neighbours.

Another solution is to choose light bulbs that emit warm colour and with lower light intensity. This is also conducive to sleep - warm colours are calming and relaxing, unlike cold ones. Kanlux LAVEN is a series of luminaires with a unique design, intended for outdoor use. The smoky shade and filament LED bulbs are the ideal option for a garden or backyard pathway. Even if the lamps are lit all night (which we do not recommend), the light is not irritating.
Kanlux PRESO is also worth checking out. All luminaires in this series give the possibility of choosing the intensity of light and its colour, as they have a replaceable light source, so you can change and adjust them according to your current needs. What's more, Kanlux PRESO luminaires, thanks to the special design of the housing, emit light sideways, not upwards, which enables proper illumination of the desired areas only.

Choosing the right lighting is not only a matter of aesthetics, but also taking care of our health and the planet. Reducing electricity bills, energy-saving solutions or preventing light pollution are just some of the matters we care about at Kanlux
