How to choose lighting for the bathroom?
The bathroom usually does not have access to natural light. Therefore, its lighting is extremely important. It is supposed to be helpful in morning bathroom routine and evening relaxation. How to properly choose lighting for the bathroom? Here are some hints!

Make a thorough plan
A functional bathroom should have several points of light. In addition to the upper lighting, which is to illuminate the room evenly, it is worth installing additional sidelights and decorative lights.
Lighting in the bathroom can be divided into:
- upper (ceiling),
- functional (side, spot),
- additional (decorative).

How many light sources your bathroom should have depends on the size and layout of the room? In dark and windowless bathrooms, it is worth increasing the number of light points. Remember to ask your electrician for the advice before you buy any lighting. Ask especially about the number of light switches. You should not install outlets and switches in areas of bathroom that are exposed to splashing water.
Main lighting
Upper lighting in the bathroom should provide light for the whole room. It is especially important when cleaning and using the bathroom during the day.
Ceiling light fixtures will be perfect for this purpose. They are mounted on the ceiling, provide diffused light and do not visually lower the room. They take up little space and do not interfere with daily use. The simple form makes them fit into any bathroom, whether decorated in industrial or classic style.
Functional lighting
Side light in the bathroom is mainly mirror lighting. It is responsible for optimal illumination of the face. Plan it so that the light stream falls directly on the person who is standing in front of the mirror.
At the mirror, you can mount two fixtures on the sides. Place them above your line of sight. This way the light stream will not dazzle you. You can also choose a light bar over the top edge of the mirror.
For mirrors, we suggest to use LED bulbs of neutral colour (about 4000K) with high colour rendering index (CRI - minimum 90). LED lighting allows us to choose the right colour that reflects the real colour of the face. The ideal option would be IQ-LED GU10 bulbs, which have a CRI of over 95 and a neutral light colour. Remember also not to place the lamps on the wall opposite the mirror. Reflecting light will distract you.

Decorative lighting
Decorative lighting in the bathroom is for the relaxation area, which is the space around the tub or by the shower. It should be mounted so that it does not dazzle the person taking a bath.
You can illuminate your shower by using downlights over the shower. LED strip lighting, on the other hand, will work well for the bathtub. Use IP65 LED strip, which features a sealed cover and is moisture resistant. These strips have great flexibility, adhesion and you can customise them to fit your individual needs. Buy them in all colours of light.

Make it safe
While choosing lamps for your bathroom, pay attention to whether they are fully safe. This room is exposed to moisture, frequent splashes and contact with water. Therefore, there is a risk of damaging the installation and even endangering lives.
Use light sources that have the appropriate ingress protection (defined as IP). You will find information about it on the packaging.
Important!
- the minimum degree of protection of the lamps shall be IP44. This means that the product is resistant to water penetration.
- lamps in the shower or next to the bathtub should have a higher IP rating, such as IP66. This will make them resistant to pressurised water jets and protect homeowners from electrocution.
Pay attention to what the lamps are made of. Those made of plastic or polycarbonate will be more resistant to moisture than metal, for example, which will rust quickly. Bathroom lamps usually have full shades, making them splash-proof to minimise the risk of damaging the bulb. However, this is not their only advantage. Lamps with closed shades eliminate the risk of reflection in the mirror and dazzle during bathing.
Select a light colour
The colour of light in the bathroom is especially important for the daily comfort of the household. To make it as high as possible, it is worth using several colours of light in it - depending on the zone.
Remember!
There are three colours of light:
cool white (CW, 5000-6500 Kelvin),
neutral white (NW, 3500-4500 Kelvin),
warm white (WW, 2700-3300 Kelvin).
In the bathroom at the mirror, a neutral colour of light will work best, making morning and evening bathroom routine comfortable. Use it for upper lighting as well. In the bathtub or shower area, opt for a warm light colour - it helps in relaxation.
Pay attention to the colour rendering index or CRI (RA) - you will find this mark on the packaging. For perfect makeup application, this indicator should be a number as close to 100 as possible.
Brighten up your interior
To illuminate the bathroom well, it is useful to know the lumen values of light sources. You will find information about it on the packaging. It is assumed that there should be about 200 lumens per square meter of room.
If you have any doubts, ask an electrician. They will certainly help you choose lighting according to the size and layout of the room, the colour of the walls, and taking into account natural light sources.
When choosing bathroom lighting, pay attention to:
- IP rating,
- light colour,
- lumens value,
- room size and placement of light sources.
Choose the lighting in your bathroom to suit your needs. The lamps you install in other rooms will not work here. Chandeliers or standing lamps can put your health at risk. They also do not provide adequate protection against short-circuiting, blowing out fuses, or fire.
