How to choose the right garage lighting for your household?

A garage is a specific place with multiple purposes, so the lighting in it must meet a variety of requirements. In most cases, users stop at one central light source located on the ceiling. Is this an optimal solution? What other garage lights would be appropriate? Keep reading.

How to choose the right garage lighting for your household? - 1

Garage lighting must take into account the different types of activities performed in the garage. In addition to parking as well as cleaning and maintaining vehicles, they often house DIY corners, home storages, laundry rooms, dryers and even gyms. In any such place, strong but diffused light is most advisable, as it facilitates activities that require attention and precise movements. In many cases, the popular Kanlux BENO LED ceiling light, used as the central ceiling lamp for the garage, will come in handy.

Since these rooms remain open for long periods of time during the day, they are often more humid and dusty. Therefore, the luminaires should have a higher tightness class than indoor luminaires to counteract the ingress of water and dust. Thus, Kanlux DABA PRO would be a good choice. These luminaires, which work with motion sensors, have an IP65 rating as well as high weather and mechanical resistance (IK10). Interestingly, they can be connected together in such a way that the one which has a sensor controls all the others. The high quality of these ceiling lights is confirmed by a 5-year warranty.

The requirement for increased resistance to the ingress of external factors also applies, of course, to luminaires installed on walls and facades. Full safety and long-term operation are ensured by TEKNO power switches and sockets of the MOWION by Kanlux brand. They feature contact protection and have an IP54 rating, making them unrivalled in high humidity and dusty environments at any time of year.

Due to frequent opening and closing throughout the day, garage lights with motion sensors will be a great option. This is especially important when you are moving large items and your hands are full, and the need to accurately illuminate the space is undisputed. An uncommon but very practical solution are side lamps with LED light sources, such as Kanlux SANSO LED. Its undoubted advantage is high dust-tightness and - due to its location - the direction of light, usually very useful when cleaning the interior of your vehicle, for example.

A universal and portable solution for every DIY enthusiast is Kanlux STATO LED. This portable floodlight with high tightness (IP65) is appreciated by professionals, for example during renovation and construction works. Due to its compact design and adjustable angle, it enables the precise illumination of any surface, e.g. the underbody. It also offers a higher colour rendering index than most floodlights (CRI≥80). So if accurate colour reproduction is important for you (for example so as not to confuse the colour of wire insulation or the shade of the paint being applied), choose LED light sources with a colour rendering index over Ra 80.

A lamp over the garage entrance – this is also an important part of garage lighting. It should provide accurate illumination of the outline of the gate to facilitate safe entry and exit, as well as to prevent any potential knocking down of household members staying nearby. Kanlux ANTEM LED floodlight will be the best solution here due to its high tightness (IP65) and solid workmanship. You can also choose a version with a motion sensor (IP44) so that the light turns on automatically.

How to plan lighting in a garage? First and foremost, consider the nature of the activities performed there. If you plan to have a mini home workshop in it, you will need sharp, intense lighting with the ability to adjust the direction of the light beam. In turn, any work under the hood or in the chassis will require small, portable light sources. If you do small repairs in your garage or simply engage in DIY projects, remember to have one main source of light, preferably one with a motion sensor, placed on the ceiling or wall, so that its light can spread over the largest possible area. And be sure to have lamps equipped with LEDs - it provides a huge savings for your wallet and much higher durability than traditional sources.
